Andre Berto Could Face Tim Bradley-Luis Carlos Abregu Winner

The promoter of WBC welterweight (147 pounds) champion, Andre Berto, has informed BoxingScene.com’s Rick Reeno that the winner of Saturday night’s HBO-televised, non-title, over-the-limit bout between WBO junior welterweight (140 pounds) champion, Tim Bradley (pictured above, at left) and welterweight rival Luis Carlos Abregu could be considered as a challenger to Berto’s title in the fall.

The 26-year-old Bradley (25-0, 11 knockouts), who is fighting at his highest weight and perhaps against his most difficult opponent, is considered to be the premiere 140-pounder in a deep and talented weight class that includes 23-year-old southpaw WBC and IBF champion Devon Alexander (20-0, 13 KOs), 23-year-old WBA king Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KOs), and, 26-year-old WBA interim champ Marcos Rene Maidana (28-1, 27 KOs).

Bradley stands only 5-foot-6 compared to 5-10 for the unbeaten Abregu, of Salta, Salta, Argentina, who is 29-0, with 23KOs. Bradley weighed in at an even 147 pounds compared to Abregu’s 146.5 pounds.

Bradley also is being considered for an HBO-televised Jan. 29 bout with Alexander, who must first defeat former WBA titlist Andriy Kotelnik (31-3-1, 13 KOs) before his hometown fans in St. Louis, Mo. on Aug. 7.

The 26-year-old Berto, of Winter Haven, Fla, is coming off of April’s career-defining, eighth-round knockout of Puerto Rican southpaw and former world champion Carlos Quintana.

Other considerations for Berto, according to a recent interview with FanHouse, are 27-year-old contender Mike Jones (22-0, 18 KOs), Slovenian IBF king Jan Zaveck (29-1, 17 KOs) or Ukrainian WBA champ Vyacheslav Senchenko (30-0, 20 KOs), among others.

Felix Sturm Returns to the Ring on Sept. 4

WBA middleweight (160 pounds) champion Felix Sturm of Germany will put his crown on the line on Sept. 4 at Lanxess-Arena, Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany potentially against ex-world champion, Ricardo Mayorga, according to a statement released on Friday.

The 31-year-old Sturm is riding an unbeaten streak of 8-0-1 since being knocked out in the 10th round by Javier Castillejo, who dethroned Sturm as WBA titlist in July of 2006. Sturm regained the title in his return bout against Castillejo, earning an April, 2007, unanimous decision.

Sturm said that he would name an opponent next week.

“There is one thing I can already tell you. We are working on a huge show, and we will present a great opponent with international experience. We have negotiated with different fighters from overseas, but for some reason, most of them asked for crazy money,” said Sturm, who had considered former two-time welterweight (147 pounds) champion, Kermit Cintron, as an opponent.

“I don’t know what they’re thinking. Here in Germany, I got calls from fighters with decent records who wanted to fight me for free — just for the shot at the title,” said Sturm. “I will not comment on any names. All I can say is that next week, we will announce a world class opponent for Sept. 4.”

Sturm has not fought since July of 2009, when he defended his crown for the seventh time with a unanimous decision over Khoren Gevor.

“I feel great at the moment. I chose to take a break to spend some time with my wife and my new-born son. It was good not to think about boxing all the time and not to count the calories on every meal,” said Sturm. “Now I am all fired up to get back into the ring. I can not wait for my comeback. I am even looking forward to the hard weeks of preparation and training camp, and I will prove that I got no ring rust whatsoever.”

Jean Pascal, Chad Dawson Make Pre-Fight Weigh-In

They are a month away from their Aug. 14 clash of talented light heavyweights (175 pounds), but WBC champion Jean Pascal of Canada and southpaw WBC interim titlist Chad Dawson, of Connecticut, participated in a 30-day, pre-fight weigh-in for their HBO-televised matchup that will be for Pascal’s crown from the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The weight limit mandated by the WBC a month before their title bout is 192.5 pounds.

The 27-year-old Pascal (25-1, 16 knockouts), who will be after his fifth consecutive win, is returning to the site where he made the successful second defense of his title with December’s unanimous decision victory over fellow Canadian Adrian Diaconu.

Despite having suffered an injury to his right shoulder against Diaconu (26-2, 15 KOs), Pascal won 117-111, on two judges cards and 118-110 on the third.

Pascal weighed in at 181 pounds at the Olympic Center of Colombia, and is training in the high altitudes of Bogota for the third defense of his crown.

“On August 14, I have a date with destiny. I have nothing but respect for Dawson,” said Pascal. “And even though I’m convinced that he will be at his best, I’ll also be coming in at the absolute peak of my abilities. To be the best, you have to beat the best. I can’t wait for that first bell to ring and be declared the champion.”

The 28-year-old Dawson (29-0, 27 KOs) tipped the scales at 177 pounds at his training camp in Las Vegas.

“I can not wait until August 14 when I face Jean Pascal in Montreal for the title I vacated in order to beat Antonio Tarver twice,” said Dawson. “Now, it’s time to reclaim my original crown and bring it home to the U.S.”

Pascal’s injury against Diacanu required surgery to repair it a couple days after the fight, which forced a rescheduling three times of the original date for Pascal’s defense against Dawson (29-0, 17 KOs).

Diaconu was the fourth straight win — including two knockouts — for the Haitian-born Pascal, whose only loss was by unanimous decision against England’s Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KOs) in their December 2008 matchup for the vacant WBC super middleweight (168 pounds) title.

Pascal-Diaconu was a rematch of their clash in June 2009, when Pascal dethroned Diaconu for the crown, 115-112, 116-112 and 116-111.

In February 2007, Dawson became the lone man to have beaten Tomasz Adamek (41-1, 27 KOs), doing so by a lopsided unanimuos decision, 116-110, 117-109 and 118-108 respectively on the cards of Anek Hongtongkam, Alejandro Rochin Mapula and Peter Trematerra.

Dawson is coming off of November’s unanimous decision victory over former world champion Glen Johnson, whom he had earlier beaten by decision in April 2008.

In between his two victories over Johnson, Dawson twice decisioned former world champ Antonio Tarver in October 2008 and May 2009.

A win over Pascal would line up Dawson for much larger paydays, said Shaw.

“Chad is ready to unify the WBC light heavyweight title and become The Ring’s [Magazine] lineal 175-pound world champion, joining the elite company which includes Billy Conn, Archie Moore and Bob Foster,” said Dawson’s promoter, Gary Shaw. “My concern isn’t that Chad wins the fight, it’s how much the airline will charge us for the additional luggage for carrying the world championship belt back.”

Marco Huck Training for Matt Godfrey

Serbian-born, WBO cruiserweight (200 pounds) champion Marco “Captain” Huck of Germany will go after his his 11th straight win and his ninth knockout during that span when he makes the fourth defense of his title against Matt Godfrey of Providence, R.I., on ug. 21 in front of his partisan fans in Erfurt, Thüringen, Germany.

The 25-year-old Huck (29-1, 22 knockouts) last suffered defeat to current IBF champion, Steve Cunningham (23-2, 12 KOs), of Philadelphia, by 12th-round knockout in December of 2007. Huck was dethroned by Cunningham as IBF titlist.

Huck, who is coming off of a May 1 ninth-round knockout of Pennslyvania’s Brian Minto (34-4, 21 KOs), is training for Godfrey (20-1, 10 KOs) in Germany.

“Despite the hot weather in Germany, we have been working really hard in practice. My trainer, Ulli Wegner, has scheduled a lot of exhausting sessions. Fighting in Erfurt will be special for him because he lived there for a long time. So I intend to put on a spectacular performance on August 21 to please him and of course my fans all over the world,” said Huck, who will try to end Godfrey’s four-bout winning streak.

“Godfrey is a tough challenger, but he has never been inside the ring with someone like me,” said Huck. “I am the best cruiserweight in the world, and I am keen to prove it once again.”

Huck and Wegner have been working out at their promotional company, Team Sauerland´s headquarters in Berlin, the Max Schmeling Gym, which is located right next to the Olympic Stadium.

At the end of the month, Huck will move his camp to Kienbaum.

“My fighters know that I am a very demanding coach. Marco is doing very well in practice. He does what I ask of him. He is willing to learn and to improve,” said Wegner. “He is such an explosive and powerful fighter, but there are still some parts of the game where he can get better. We are working on that and are already looking forward to August 21.”

Boxer Wears Pink to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Call him pretty in pink and Lenroy “Cam” Thompson will just smile.

Heckle him for wearing pink trunks, pink headgear and a pink T-shirt in the boxing ring and he’ll laugh.

The 21-year-old super-heavyweight from Lenexa, Kan., is seeking his second title at the USA boxing national championships Saturday night and has found a unique way to promote both himself and the fight against breast cancer.

He fights his opponents decked out in light pink trunks adorned with the cause’s signature pink ribbon, pink headgear and a pink T-shirt that reads “Fighting is a lot easier when your opponent isn’t cancer.”

He sells shirts outside the ring to raise funds and he also goes to mixed martial arts fights and sets up shop hawking T-shirts that have all the fighting disciplines from jujitsu to kick boxing listed on one side with a giant pink X over them and the M.M.A. initials standing for Much More Awareness written on the other side. Beneath, is his motto: “Team CAM: Get a mam, ma’am.”

He’s adding black tank tops with pink writing to his clothing line for guys who don’t dare don the pink.

Thompson doesn’t have any relatives who have had breast cancer. He said he was inspired to go pink after fighting at a breast cancer awareness tournament in Tampa, Fla., a few years ago.

His awareness campaign has drawn both dollars and dispute. He was admonished at the national championships to cover up another of his sayings, this one stitched into his shorts that reads “I [heart] boobs.”

The officials allowed Thompson to put white athletic tape over the last word during his semifinal win over O’Jayland Brown on Thursday night, and he’ll do the same when he fights Danny Kelly of Washington D.C., in the finals.

“Every woman knows what the breast cancer symbol is,” Thompson said. “Now, the guys, I put something on my shorts to draw more attention. I’ve never had a problem with it before. I figure guys will find that funny and women will know what I’m doing, so I’ve got everything covered.”

Except for the children.

Angel Villarreal, national chief of officials for USA Boxing, said minors in the stands might not understand the nuance of Thompson’s message and mistake it as misogynistic.

“Everybody in the sport knows he’s bringing great awareness to the breast cancer cause and we support him, but the kids in the audience might not get it and their parents might find it offensive,” Villarreal said.

Ultimately, Thompson said he didn’t mind the flap.

“If I wear all pink, I draw attention and what I want is attention,” Thompson said.

His pink attire has been a big hit with fans — once the crowd figures it out.

“This is kind of a double-edged sword because you can make fun of me because I’m wearing pink, but then you have a mother,” Thompson said. “So, they can’t quite say anything.”

Thompson, who fights at 217 pounds and is almost always smaller and quicker than his beefier opponents, has found a following he figures he never would have attracted were it not for the pink attire.

“I wasn’t the most-liked fighter in the world because of my fighting style. I run a lot and I just avoid being hit. I’m a super- heavyweight. Everyone expects us to knock people out. I don’t knock people out. I don’t hit hard. I score points. People don’t like that.

“After this, I’m a much more liked person.”

Thompson said none of his opponents has ever given him grief for wearing pink.

“I dare ‘em,” he said. “I dare ‘em.”

Flyweight Rau’shee Warren, a two-time Olympian and the headliner at these championships, said Thompson has the admiration of fellow fighters not just for his prowess in the ring but his signature color scheme.

“Hey, that’s something we all should be doing, fighting for something,” Warren said. “Everybody should have a reason for fighting.”

Thompson has no designs on ever going pro. But he does plan for a lifetime in boxing.

When he’s not fighting or hawking T-shirts, he serves as a personal trainer and boxing coach and also works as a special projects director at Ringside, the boxing equipment manufacturer outside Kansas City.

He said he wants to put on a boxing event he hopes will raise $40,000 in donations.

“In 10 years, I want to be able to say I raised $1 million to fight breast cancer,” Thompson said.
