Marcos Rene Maidana Returns in August, Wants Amir Khan

Hammer-fisted, Argentinian WBA interim junior welterweight (140 pounds) champion, Marcos Rene Maidana, has signed “a long-term, multi-year” deal with Golden Boy Promotions, should return to the ring in August for a “stay-sharp fight,” and may compete on American soil as early as November or December perhaps against WBA king, Amir Khan, said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

The 26-year-old Maidana, (28-1, 27 knockouts) is coming off of a March, sixth-round knockout over Dominican Republican-born, Victor Cayo (24-1, 16 KOs) for his third straight victory and his third consecutive knockout since a February, 2009 split-decision loss for the WBA crown to Ukrainian-born, 32-year-old Andrey Kotelnik (31-3-1, 13 KOs), of Germany.

After that, Maidana’s career stalled as three, proposed bouts with WBO junior welterweight king Tim Bradley (25-0, 11 KOs) were postponed for alleged back injuries that were later discovered to be a cover for managerial problems, according to Schaefer.

Schaefer said that it is not out of the realm of possibility to see Maidana face Khan (23-1, 17 KOs), of England, in an HBO-televised, Dec. 11 bout either in England or the United States.

“First of all, Marcos Maidana signed a brand new promotional contract with us, and, so, he’s actually going to see what he wants to do next. He’s going to be fighting in August in Argentina, a stay-sharp fight, and then, after that, he would like to fight in November or December here in the United States,” said Schaefer.

“The two names most prominently that he has mentioned were Timothy Bradley, and the other one, Amir Khan. We’ll see which one that it will be,” said Schaefer. “So we’ll see. You never know. We might see on Dec. 11 Khan versus Maidana. That’s another possibility that I will be discussing with Team Khan.”

That could work out perfectly in the junior welterweight division, which also includes Bradley and WBC and IBF king Devon Alexander, who appear to be on a collision course for an HBO-televised Jan 29 bout that is contingent on each of them winning big fights.

On July 17, the 26-year-old Bradley of Palm Springs, Calif. will take on welterweight (147 pounds) Carlos Luis Abregu (29-0, 23 KOs) of Salta Salta, Argentina, in an HBO-televised, non-title over the limit bout that is slated for the Agua Caliente Casino, in Rancho Mirage, Calif., near Bradley’s hometown.

A 23-year-old southpaw with a mark of 20-0, with 13 KOs, Alexander takes the ring for the HBO-televised Aug. 7, second defense of his WBC title, and the first of his IBF crown against Kotelnik before his hometown fans in St. Louis, Mo.

Khan will be at ringside at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas for the July 31 bout between WBO and WBA lightweight (135 pounds) champion, Juan Manuel Marquez (50-5-1, 37 KOs), of Anaheim, Calif., and, Juan Diaz (35-3, 17 KOs), of Houston, Tex. Marquez-Diaz II is a rematch of a February, 2009, Fight of the Year won by Marquez via ninth-round knockout.

Khan-Maidana “would depends on the outcome of July 31,” said Schaefer.

“If Juan Diaz should win, then that would be again, a Fight of the Year candidate, and then there could be a third fight between Diaz and Marquez. So that a trilogy would make the most sense for those two guys in my opinion. If Marquez would win, then the question would be for him that he would have several options,” said Schaefer.

“One of them would be to go after a title in a fourth weight class, and to be the first Mexican to do so,” said Schaefer. “Another would be to try and fight Amir Khan. If he decides that he decides that he’s going to stay at 135, then, obviously, the mandatory would be against Michael Katsidis, who, by the way, will be sitting at ringside on July 31 as well.”

If Marquez chooses to face someone other than Khan, then Maidana could be the likely rival for the Englishman, Schaefer said.

“Maidana said that he would be willing to take on anyone,” said Schaefer. “I asked [Khan's trainer] Freddie Roach, and he’s stated that they are certainly open to fighting Marcos Maidana. So Maidana is actually a big factor with Amir Khan’s future.”

Will Trainer’s Legal Woes Delay Mayweather-Pacquiao?

Although Manny Pacquaio has agreed in principle to put his WBO welterweight (147 pounds) belt on the line against Floyd Mayweather

Mayweahter, giving his unbeaten counterpart until mid-July sign the contract, Pacquaio’s promoter, Bob Arum, isn’t sure that Mayweather

Mayweahter’s final decision will be that simple.

Because if Mayweather

Mayweahter agrees to face Pacquaio on the proposed date of Nov. 13, there is a chance that he would have to do so without his uncle and longtime trainer, Roger Mayweather

Mayweahter, in his corner.

Roger Mayweather

Mayweahter goes to trial on Aug. 2 in the Clark County District Court in Nevada for allegedly choking and assaulting female boxer Melissa St. Vil while training her nearly a year ago in Las Vegas. He could face up to 10 years in prison, if convicted.

“I’m just saying that I would think that a lot of the problem is Roger’s status. I don’t know for sure, and nobody’s told me this,” said Arum. “But I would believe that he’s concerned about Roger’s availability and what Roger’s status would be.”

Representatives from Mayweather

Mayweahter’s camp could not be reached.

The agreement between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions reportedly contains provisions for random drug-testing and a tentative agreement on a 50-50 split of the purse.

Arum declined to discuss purse-split negotiations, but he told the Los Angeles Times that Pacquaio has agreed to submit to random pre-fight blood tests up to 14 days before a fight with Mayweather

Mayweahter.

“We don’t care who’s doing the test. They [United States Anti-Doping Agency] stopped taking blood 18 days before [Floyd Mayweather

Mayweahter-Shane Mosley], so that shows they can do it and be fine,” Arum told the Los Angeles Times.

“If there’s information that emerges in the final 14 days, we can go to the [Nevada State Athletic] Commission and ask for more tests,” said Arum. “We can work it out. No one’s looking to pull any fast ones.”

If Mayweather

Mayweahter-Pacquaio is not made for the fall, “we would go ahead and try to make a fight maybe in May” against Mayweather

Mayweahter, Arum said.

In the meantime, Arum said he would try to put Pacquaio in against either Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto, the latter being a rematch of Pacquaio’s 12th-round knockout for the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) title last November.

“I know that Manny would have a problem fighting if [trainer] Freddie Roach were not available, so we’re just waiting to see,” said Arum. “That would be up to Floyd whether he wants to do the fight this year or next year.”

“I’m just saying that I would think that a lot of the problem is Roger’s status. I don’t know for sure, and nobody’s told me this,” said Arum. “But I would believe that he’s concerned about Roger’s availability and what Roger’s status would be.”

The agreement between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions reportedly contains conditions pertaining to Mayweather

Mayweahter’s demand for a random drug testing protocol and a tentative agreement on a 50-50 split of the purse.

Arum declined to discuss purse-split negotiations, but he told Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times that Pacquaio has agreed to submit to random pre-fight blood tests up to 14 days before a fight with Mayweather

Antonio Margarito to Attempt to Regain Boxing License Friday

Antonio MargaritoFormer world champion Antonio Margarito, whose boxing license was revoked in California following an illegal hand-wrapping scandal, will appear before a five-member panel of the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Friday in Las Vegas in an attempt to regain his status to fight in the United States, his promoter, Bob Arum, confirmed to FanHouse.

ESPN’s Dan Rafael initially reported the situation.

The 32-year-old Margarito (38-6, 27 knockouts) is coming off of May’s 10-round, unanimous decision over Roberto Garcia in a junior middleweight (154 pounds) clash that was fought in Mexico, which licensed him for the bout.

The performance ended a more than one-year ring absence for Margarito, who had been suspended by the California State Athletic Commission after a ninth-round knockout loss to Shane Mosley in January of 2009 dethroned him as WBA champion.

Margarito’s ring exile stemmed from the discovery by Mosley’s trainer, Naazim Richardson, that the Mexican’s fist wrappings included a plaster-like substance that was subsequently removed and confiscated prior to the fight.

“Antonio is well-represented, and he’s going to present his case to the Nevada Commission, and hopefully, they will see it his way and give him a license,” said Arum. “I think that he’s been out for more than enough time.”

Margarito’s suspension ended on February 11.

Margarito claims no knowlege of the wrappings, instead blaming his trainer, Javier Capetillo, for the illegal substance in his gloves — even amid speculation that Margarito’s gloves may have been loaded against vanquished rivals such as Kermit Cintron and Miguel Cotto, whom Margarito beat savagely and bloodily before scoring knockouts.

“He’s [Capetillo] the one that wrapped the hands. So he’s the one who does the job,” Margarito has told FanHouse. “All that I do is put my hands out there so that he can wrap them, and that’s what I did.”

Nevada State Athletic Commission director Keith Kizer could not be reached. But in April, Kizer told FanHouse that Margarito had a number of options.

Initially, Kizer said that Margarito should return to California to re-apply for a license before attempting to fight anywhere in the United States, although Texas had indicated a willingness to allow the former champion to fight there.

“Margarito could come to Nevada today, apply for a license, and I could give him a license administratively, but I’m not going to do that,” said Kizer. “He would have to be placed on our agenda, and that would be up to our chairman. She could put him on it right away, or she could make him wait a while.”

According to the ESPN report, Margarito’s request is the last of the 32 items on the agenda.

If Margarito is licensed, Arum said that he could eventually match Margarito against Manny Pacquaio in November or Cotto, the newly-crowned WBA junior middleweight titlist, in December.

Pacquaio, however, is in negotiations for a potential bout against Floyd Mayweather

Mayweahter that could happen in either November of May, Arum said.

“I would have some questions that he would need to answer from me,” before granting Margarito a license, said Kizer. “And if he doesn’t answer them truthfully, then I would recommend not granting a license to him.”

Margarito has fought in California more than a dozen times during his career, but was not granted a license to return to the ring for the undercard of Pacquaio’s March 13, unanimous decision victory over Joshua Clottey (Pacman next!) at Cowboys Stadium. He would have fought Carson Jones (26-7-1, 15 KOs).

Arum said then that he believed that Margarito’s next fight “will be in the United States,” mentioning that he hoped “to get Margarito licensed in various states, as he should be,” such as “Nevada, or Texas, one of those places.”

In another development, Kizer also told FanHouse that he believed that Margarito did not have loaded gloves during his 11th-round knockout of Cotto — as many have speculated — for the WBA welterweight title in July of 2008 at the MGM Grand.

“I know that he wasn’t rigged during the Cotto fight because we had our inspectors check him out and everything, as did Cotto’s people. He was fully checked out. One of our referees, Jay Nady, was back there, we had our inspectors back there. Cotto’s guy was back there. They all checked him out and everything was fine,” said Kizer, referring to Margarito’s fight prior to the one against Mosley.

“They felt the hand wraps and everything, and we have an inspector who I’ve seen check the hand wraps before, and he checks them out thoroughly,” said Kizer. “He watched the hand wraps that night. If you don’t have experienced inspectors, you can probably slip something through.”

Chris Arreola Fights Manny Quezada on Aug. 13

Heavyweight contender Chris Arreola of Riverside, Calif., will be attempting to rebound from having lost two of his past three bouts on Aug. 13 when he takes on promotional stablemate Manny Quezada at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.

On the ESPN2-televised card, Arreola (28-2, 25 knockouts) will be in the ring for the first time since April 24, when he lost a majority decision to former light heavyweight (175 pounds) and cruiserweight (200 pounds) champion Tomasz Adamek (41-1, 27 KOs), winner of his 10th consecutive victory and only his third as a heavyweight.

Arreola was coming off of December’s knockout of Brian Minto before losing to Adamek. Prior to that, Arreola had been stopped in the 10th round in September, when he unsuccessfully challenged WBC champion, Vitali Klitschko.

“We finally finalized Arreola’s next fight with Manuel Quezada. Chris has been training. The way that I look at Chris’s career right now is that we have one of the most exciting heavyweights since the days of Mike Tyson,” said Dan Goossen, Arreola’s promoter.

“With total dedication, I believe that he can rise to the level that Mike Tyson achieved,” said Goossen. “But it takes complete and utter sacrifice, and I believe that he’s capable of it. But that question will have to be answered on Aug. 13.”

Quezada (29-5, 18 KOs) is coming off of an April 8, split-decision, upset loss to Jason Gavern that ended a run of 18 consecutive victories, nine of them by knockout.

“I’ve got a Mexican heavyweight that believes that he’s been in the shadows of Arreola for the last couple of years, and hasn’t been able to get his opportunity to overcome that shadow,” said Goossen.

“This is another guy who we’ve been promoting for the past four years, and he’s very motivated,” said Goossen. “He too has not always shown the dedication that is needed in the gym. The winner of this fight will win it by preparing for it in the gym.”
