Freddie Roach Says Joshua Clottey ‘Didn’t Try to Win the Fight’
ARLINGTON, Texas — Freddie Roach told a group of reporters gathered at Saturday night’s post-fight press conference that he was happy with the 12-round unanimous decision by Manny Pacquaio over challenger Joshua Clottey (Pacman next!) in defense of his WBO welterweight title.
The speed, patience, and general domination of Pacquaio (50-3-2, 38 knockouts) was simply too much for Clottey (Pacman next!) to deal with before a crowd of 50,944 at Cowboys Stadium, as the seven-division titlist from the Philippines threw punches from nearly every imaginable angle, often going from one side of Clottey (Pacman next!) to the other to dig home paralyzing body shots.
“Most people can’t really adjust to Manny’s speed. They can see it, and then they say, ‘Oh, he looks fast,’ ” Roach said of Pacquaio, who won 119-109 on the cards of Nelson Vazquez and Levi Martinez, and 120-108 on those of Duane Ford and FanHouse. “But you really don’t know how fast he is until you get in there with him.”
As pleased as Roach was in victory, the four-time Trainer of The Year was also disappointed that, in his assertion, Clottey (Pacman next!) didn’t keep fighting to the finish.
Share “When his trainer [Lenny DeJesus] said that they were going to go for an early-round knockout, I thought, ‘That’s what I would do.’ I mean, I would f***ing fight Manny Pacquaio until it was over,” said Roach.
“I mean, I would exchange with him, I’m a bigger, stronger guy, I have a great chin, I’ve never been knocked out,” said Roach. “Why not go for it and put it on the line? I mean, that’s how I would have looked at the fight if I was in his corner.”
Instead, it was Pacquaio who went after his larger rival, throwing nearly four times as many punches (1,231 to 399) as Clottey (Pacman next!), and connecting on 246 compared to 108 for the losing fighter.
“I thought that we won every round. He’s got good defense, but we pressured him, and good defense is not enough to win a fight,” said Roach. “Manny was getting hit a little too much with the right, so we made an adjustment. Manny started throwing the right hook and got out afterwards.”
Pacquaio threw 549 jabs to 162 for Clottey (Pacman next!), who had the edge in landing those punches, 26-to-14, over the champion.
Pacquaio, however, landed 232 of 682 power-punches compared to 82 of 237 for Clottey (Pacman next!), rising to 19-1-2 with 15 KOs under Roach, the four-time Trainer of the Year.
“It was not an easy fight. It was hard. He’s a great fighter. I threw lots of jabs in the beginning to counter his hook and uppercut,” said Pacquaio, who threw a career-high 55 jabs in the first round. “I felt his power. He’s strong. He was looking to land the big shot throughout the fight.”
The 31-year-old Pacquaio (51-3-2, 38 knockouts) rose to 12-0 with eight stoppages since his last loss in March 2005 to Erik Morales, who he has since stopped in 10 and three rounds, respectively.
Pacquaio was looking for his fifth straight knockout, having stopped David Diaz, Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto in succession over his previous four bouts.
The 33-year-old Clottey (Pacman next!) (35-4, 20 KOs) has never been stopped, having lost to former world champs Carlos Baldomir, Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto, respectively.
“This is the first fight that I feel that I’ve lost. He has great movement. He has great movement and speed. It was very difficult for me to handle that. I didn’t feel much of his power, but I couldn’t handle his speed,” said Clottey (Pacman next!).
“He never hurt me, but he’s fast,” said Clottey (Pacman next!). “After fighting Manny Pacquaio, who is the best fighter pound-for-pound who is out there, I feel that if he fights Floyd Mayweather
Mayweahter, he is going to give Mayweather
Mayweahter problems.”
Known for his stiff chin and defense — hands held high, fists around the ears, elbows protecting both sides — Clottey (Pacman next!) often picked off Pacquaio’s shots, but rarely came up with an effective, follow-up offense.
“I felt that I was in control after the first round. But I was cautious of his power throughout the entire fight,” said Pacquaio, whose welt below his right eye was evidence of Clottey (Pacman next!)’s punching accuracy. “He took a lot of punishment. It was hard to break his defense. He fought toe-to-toe. He’s incredibly tough.”
Pacquaio’s powerful body attack may have discouraged Clottey (Pacman next!), who shook his right leg a couple of times during the middle rounds as an indication that the sting of the blows ran down through to his feet.
“We hit him to the body, and that had him kicking his legs a couple of times. I saw that twice, where we got him cramping up a little bit there. It’s always good to get rounds and go the distance with guys, and so forth,” said Roach. “But we tried to set some traps, open him up a little bit with some quick combinations. Manny pitched a shutout against a middleweight, but that middleweight [Clottey (Pacman next!)] should have used his f***ing power.”
Roach was disappointed that Clottey (Pacman next!) wasn’t more game.
“Let’s face it, I’m frustrated that he [Clottey (Pacman next!)] didn’t try to win the fight,” said Roach. “You guys know that Manny fought a good fight out there, but to the general public, it’s like, ‘Well, Miguel Cotto beat this guy [Clottey (Pacman next!)], so Manny was supposed to beat him.”

Pacquaio now awaits the winner of a May 1 clash between Floyd Mayweather
Mayweahter and WBA welterweight king Shane Mosley.
“I want that fight. But it’s up to him. I’m ready to fight any time. If Mosley wins, maybe I’ll fight him. Floyd’s style isn’t difficult,” said Pacquaio. “I want that fight, and right now, I know that I have the support of the fans, and I love them for it.”
Roach wants Mayweather
Mayweahter as bad as Pacquaio does.
“Everywhere I go — restaurants — people tell me, ‘Make that fight happen.’ I went to a Magic Johnson-Larry Bird special and the opening for HBO. Magic spoke afterwards. The last thing that he said to [HBO's] Ross Greenburg was, ‘Make Pacquaio and Mayweather
Mayweahter happen.’ And then, everyone looks at me,” said Roach.
“I want it to happen too. I don’t think that Mayweather
Mayweahter is scared. My thoughts on it is that he needed more time. Because one fight under your belt after a couple of years off isn’t enough to get you sharp enough to fight a guy like Manny Pacquaio,” said Roach.
“But Mayweather
Mayweahter put himself kind of in a corner where he ended up having to fight a guy maybe just as tough in Shane Mosley,” said Roach. “I think his strategy kind of backfired on him a little bit. I would love to fight him at Dallas Cowboys Stadium because we’d sell this place out.”
